Surfing in Devon and Cornwall

Plymouth is a great place to be located for visiting many areas of Devon and Cornwall. Surfing beaches are predominately on the North coast and of course famous surfing places like Newquay are just over the hour away from Plymouth. Although the waves in South Devon and Cornwall are generally smaller that the North coast you can still get very respectable waves for surfing. Close to Plymouth are Bantham and Whitsand Bay. Both places are good for surfing. Check out the surf conditions on our home page.

The beach area is privately owned and not been subjected to commerce as yet! The result of this is that when you visit you have to bring everything you need for the day with you. The beach has the River Avon flow into it so it is cut off from Bigbury-on-sea by the river flowing into the sea. Some hard core kayakers seem to take pleasure in paddling against the flow.

Being the south coast the waves are generally smaller than the north coast, but Batham still gets a respectable surfing wave, and is quite consistant, it is one of the better surf beaches on the South Devon coast. It is becoming a popular location for kitesurfing - you must be insured to kitesurf here.

Dry feet kite activities are not recommended in the high summer, there are too many holiday makers. Life guards will ask you to pack up if you are not showing common sense.
